Understanding Your Dog Through the LEGS® Framework

Ever wonder why dogs do the things they do? Hint: it’s not just about training or how you raise them.

In this engaging hour long workshop, participants will be introduced to Family Dog Mediation® and the LEGS® Framework: Learning, Environment, Genetics, and Self.

Together, we’ll explore how each of these elements shape dog’s behavior, seeing the whole dog, not just the “problem”. We discuss the “why” and the “how”.

Participants will:

  • Learn why behavior challenges are rarely about training or disobedience.

  • Explore how daily life, past experiences, health and breed history influence dogs behavior.

  • Take part in a fun, interactive genetics activity using breed group handouts (Herding, Terriers, Bulldogs, and more) to discover how your dogs nature shows up in your home.

  • Walk away with a Quick Start LEGS® self-check handout and breed resource to better understand and support your dog(s).

This workshop is designed for libraries, community groups, and dog-friendly organizations. It’s conversational, accessible, and encourages Q&A throughout.

Duration: approx. 60 minutes
Best for: Adult dog guardians (can be tailored for youth or family audiences)
Format: 40 minute interactive presentation with additional 20 minute open Q&A and informative hand-outs

What to expect…

  • A black and white dog with a purple collar and tag, lying on a brown couch indoors, with sunlight streaming in through a window behind.

    Clarity

The LEGS framework (Learning, Environment, Genetics, and Self) shines a light on why dogs do what they do, helping you understand behavior in a whole new way.

  • A black and gray dog standing on green grass in an open field, looking up at the camera. There is a red rubber toy nearby on the ground, and a tree with a fence and cloudy sky in the background.

    Humor

Every breed or mix of breeds comes with quirks, tendencies and traits. Sometimes frustrating, often times hilarious. Together, we’ll laugh as we appreciate what makes our dogs unique.

  • Close-up of a large black dog, possibly a Cane Corso, wearing a harness, looking upward with a wooden ceiling and blue wall in the background.

    Perspective

When you begin to see behavior as your dog’s language, everything changes. Shifting your perspective opens the door to empathy, connection and better communication.
